The Houston County Public Works Department will be closing the Landfill to observe Labor Day on Monday, September 6, 2021. In addition, trash collection will be running one (1) day behind during the week of September 6, 2021 to September 10, 2021.

Waste Management Services is contracted with Houston County to provide the best curbside waste disposal service available to the residents of the unincorporated areas. Below you will find details pertaining to the solid waste collection process and procedures.

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE AND CART PLACEMENT
You will be provided with a 95 gallon cart. You cart is emptied once per week per the schedule. Placement of the cart at the curb is very important.
- Place you cart at least 5' (feet) away from any obstacle such as a mailbox, recycle container or additional cart.
- The cart must be positioned with the handle facing away from the curb and no more than 2' (feet) away from the curb.
- The cart must be positioned by the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on your pickup day.
- If your cart is picked up for non-payment, you will be charged a $25.00 redelivery fee in order to get the can back.
- Carts should be rinsed out periodically to help maintain sanitary conditions. ( A small scoop of laundry detergent put in cart and rinsed with water works great)
An additional cart may be requested for an additional charge of $7.00 per month. Please call the Houston County Public Works Department at 478-987-4299 to order an additional cart.
Household garbage includes any waste generated on a daily basis. This DOES NOT include tires, hazardous waste or liquid paint.
Bag any loose items such as Styrofoam to keep them from blowing away while the cart is being emptied.
Do not put hot ashes in the container.
The cart remains the property of the Houston County Commissioners and must not be painted, abused or mutilated. If your cart needs repair please call 478-987-1411.
You will be provided with an 18 gallon bin to be used for recyclables. Recyclables are picked up twice monthly per the schedule. The following items will be accepted for recycling:
- Newspapers - including all inserts
- Aluminum and tin cans - labels do not have to be removed
- Plastic Pete #1 soft drink bottles
- HDPE #2 milk jugs
- Opaque water jugs
NOT ACCEPTED: CHEMICAL OR MOTOR OIL CONTAINERS, GLASS, CARDBOARD, OR PLASTIC BAGS

If all of your recyclables will not fit in your bin, please feel free to place extra in bags and place next the bin. All items must be placed by the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. and placed at least 5' (feet) away from your 95 gallon cart. Bulk waste is provided for residential homes only.
Appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, water tanks, washers, dryers must be scheduled for pickup. Please call 478-987-1411 to schedule a pickup.
Yard waste includes:
- Pine straw
- Pine cones
- Grass clippings
- Tree trimmings
- Christmas trees
- Other matter generated from the maintenance of your yard
Yard waste DOES NOT include:
- Plastic painting tubs
- Landscaping timbers
- Wooden fencing
- Posts, pallets, cross ties
- Any type of land clearing
Tree limbs and branches must be no more than 5' (feet) in length, 8" in diameter and weigh not more than 40 lbs.
Leaves, grass clippings, pine straw, pine cones, small twigs, sticks, shrubbery clippings and other small items should be bagged and weigh no more than 40 lbs.
Please use bags strong enough so they will not break when picked up.
One pile five (5) feet long by five (5) feet wide by ten (10) feet deep will be collected per pickup.
Yard waste is picked up weekly per the schedule.
Yard waste must be placed by the curb by 7:00 a.m.
Yard waste is provided for residential homes only. Businesses that use a household cart are not provided yard or bulk waste pickup.
Yard waste and bulk waste must be in separate piles. If it is mixed, it will not be picked up.
Bulk waste includes the following:
- Other large items that cannot be placed in the cart
Bulk waste DOES NOT include the following:
- Construction Debris
- Dead Animals
- Hazardous Waste
- Yard Waste
- Auto Parts
Bulk waste is picked up weekly. However, you must call at least two (2) days prior to pick up day to be scheduled for furniture and appliances.
Bulk waste should be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
